MyCleanPC.com Review
Watching television this evening I saw an ad for "My Clean PC", (I have also heard their ads on the radio) a company advertising to speed up your PC and solve your PC problems. Being in the computer industry, I thought this was a good opportunity to download the software and review it. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of programs that allow you to download a program but you can't fix anything until you pay for it. There are numerous free programs that generally do a better job than these types of programs. Also, with the amount of rogue malware programs attacking computers I was curious about this software.
The site is slick and very professionally done, however it appears the software is just another slicker version of CyberDefender.

The program is registry cleaner type software. It installs and scans your computer for "problems", then shows hundreds of issues in hopes that you will believe all the hype and purchase the product. I ran Hijackthis and CCleaner before installing the software on an older Windows XP machine. After installing the software, it proceeded to scan my computer as shown below.
The scan finishes and displays the following screen showing a total of 1309 errors on my computer. Unfortunately, that would probably be enough to scare anyone into purchasing the software.
However, after examining the errors that the software found,
it becomes clear how these errors are discovered. The software searches for
empty registry keys among other things and displays each empty registry key as
a problem. So, I have some empty registry keys in the registry. Yes, this would
technically slow the computer down a bit and removing them would increase the computer's
speed slightly. However, is it a good idea to remove an empty registry key?
Many times, these keys are placeholders and will contain data at different
times. If I remove it, this could cause a problem in the future with that
particular software program. For this reason, I am not a fan of removing every
empty registry key. It’s also a reason that programs like CCleaner, do not scan
for every empty registry key. Deleting the wrong items in the registry can
cause a system to have problems or not boot at all. This is also why I'm
not a fan of almost all registry cleaners. The chance of removing something
that is needed is too great, especially by a novice computer user.
Conclusion
In reality MyCleanPC.com downloads nothing more than a registry cleaner. CCleaner, a well-known free program, will do just a good a job at cleaning the registry and removing junk files from your computer than MyCleanPC. For this reason, I would recommend that you don't download MyCleanPC and use a variety of free tools like CCleaner to get the job done instead.
